Whatever place in this world you go there will be one restaurant or a coffee place or a roadside hotel which is very famous for one of their food items. For example, Babai hotel in Vijayawada is famous for their idly, Bawarchi restaurant in Hyderabad is famous for their biryani and Giordano’s in Chicago for their Pizza. These places either break the traditional shackles or put tradition at the center of everything they do. But two things that are common in these places are excellence and persistence. Bawarchi’s biryani tastes the same on any day.
Coming to the point, recently while having a meeting with a client he mentioned that he had masala dosa at Vidyarthi Bhavan in Bangalore on that day. That has broached the subject of dosas at that place and all my colleagues showed immense alacrity to participate in the discussion. So I asked them about that restaurant, they told me that the restaurant is 70 year old and is very famous for their masala dosa. When I spoke about the restaurant with my other colleagues, their immediate reaction is wow, an excellent place to have masala dosa. After that, I couldn’t wait to taste their dosa. So I took the address and decided to visit the place during the weekend.
I couldn’t find the way to that place from Lalbagh, but an auto driver who is going through the same place asked me to follow him and I did so. As soon as I reached the place I found 30 people waiting to get in. I then got my name added to the list of people who want to get in. While waiting, I found a board which says that the restaurant is open from 6.30 am to 11.30 am and 2.00 pm to 8.00 pm on weekdays, 6.30 am to 12.00 pm and 2.00 pm to 8.00 pm on weekends and is closed on Fridays. I got my name called in 10 minutes. One can understand that the hotel is very old looking at the ambiance. There were sketches of famous people, who have visited the place, on the walls of the hotel, some of them are of M.S. Subbu Lakshmi, Vishnu Vardhan (famous Kannada actor) and Yedurappa (Ex. Chief minister of Karnataka). We ordered masala dosa as soon as the waiter came to us. All the waiters were wearing lungis and whenever they come out of the kitchen they were carrying 15 plates of dosas at a time.
It took 15-20 minutes to get our dosas, whereas in other restaurants you can get in 5 minutes. But I didn’t lose my patience as it is understandable that it takes time when 100 people in the restaurant order dosas at the same time. But all the pain of waiting has gone when the first piece of dosa went into the mouth. It is simply superb. I wanted to thank my client who told me about the place.
Next place to visit is Brahman’s Cafe, which is famous for their idly … 🙂
